An operations manager is the person who is in charge of making sure that the operations of a company or a particular department run without any hitch. An operations manager is entrusted with the task so as to keep a check on the ERP system of the organization and see that it's working properly and is maintained as well. Thus the function of the manager is to look after the overall strategies and its proper and effective implementation. Although the job responsibilities of the post vary from organization to organisation, there are some basic things duties which he is expected to perform:

• The manager supervise the production process and must ensure the quality of a product stands up to the standards of the company
• Operations are not always related to only business but also means taking care of the employees and making sure that they are not under any risk, and an operations manager is responsible for ensuring the safety of the employees too
• Another important area he has to look into is the machinery and equipment of a factory, see if any part needs to be changed or can pose a threat to any worker
• Besides inspecting the machines, he must also conduct reviews of the employees to ensure that the quality of work and productivity is maintained
• Some of them also need to be part of a decision-making process and may have to be directly involved in the hiring and firing of an employee
• An operations manager has to make sure that programs related to the customer support and trouble shooting is going well.
• Besides performing specific tasks the manger has to also look into the day to day operations like that of warehousing, purchases and many others.

An operations manager, besides supervising the various operations, must have basic training in the all the technicalities, machines etc as this job requires skills and knowledge. He may have to work with other departments like the HR, IT or finance. In order to be an operations manager, one may go for a commerce degree or an MBA. Other skills and specifications which are needed in order to be an efficient candidate for the post include strong leadership qualities, communication skills, good organizational skills, computer knowledge, management skills, negotiation skills, experience in ERP, good mathematical skills and others. An operations manager should be capable of working in an unstructured environment and should be capable of working in teams as well as individually. Thus properly defined operations manager job description helps a candidate to get clear ideas about his job profile, duties, skills and other needed factors.
